How to store perfume — light, heat and scent quality
Practical perfume storage habits for protecting your bottle from direct sunlight, humidity and large temperature changes.
Choose a stable storage location
A dry drawer or cupboard with a relatively stable temperature is generally preferable to a sunny windowsill or a car. Direct light and large temperature changes can gradually affect scent and colour. A humid bathroom is less suitable for long-term storage.
Keep the bottle properly closed
Replace the cap after use. For travel, choose a clean, suitable atomizer and retain the fragrance name so you know what it contains.
Follow the maker’s guidance
Age alone does not tell the whole story. Check unusual changes in scent, appearance or the spray mechanism, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Explore fragrances by scent family or read the Journal for more practical guidance.
